The Past President’s Council of the Historical Society of Central Florida, Inc., requests nominees for the 2010 Donald A. Cheney Award. The award is named for Judge Donald A. Cheney who founded the Historical Society of Central Florida (Orange County Regional History Center) and was instrumental in the founding of the Central Florida Boy Scout Council, the Central Florida YMCA, and the Orlando Rotary Club. It recognizes individuals in the Central Florida community who have followed Cheney’s mission of historic preservation and community service.
Nominations should be limited to one page and should outline the nominee’s role in the following:
1) Preservation of our local history and support of local historic preservation efforts
and
2) Improvement of our community through civic engagement
The Donald A. Cheney Award recipient will be celebrated at the Historical Society’s annual meeting on September 22, 2010, with special acknowledgement of the recipient’s accomplishments, as well as the legacy of civic engagement of the organizations with which the recipient is involved.

Purpose:
The Donald A. Cheney Award was established by the Historical Society of Central Florida, Inc., to recognize and pay tribute to individuals in the Central Florida community who contribute to and preserve Central Florida’s cherished history. The award is named after Judge Donald A. Cheney, a devoted student and promoter of local history, as well as the founder of the Orange County Historical Society and the Orange County Historical Museum, the predecessors of the current Historical Society and Orange County Regional History Center. The award is presented to an individual who embodies a love, reverence, and unfailing dedication to the preservation of our local history.
The Donald A. Cheney Award recipient is selected annually by the Past President’s Council of the Historical Society. Nominations are accepted from Members of the Historical Society. Recipients are honored during the annual meeting of the Historical Society in September of each year. The Past President’s Council presents the award and calls attention to the historic legacy of the History Center’s founder, Judge Donald A. Cheney.
