Each year the Historical Society of Central Florida presents the Donald A. Cheney Award to a Central Floridian who embodies unfailing dedication to our area’s history. The award also celebrates the late Judge Donald A. Cheney, the Historical Society’s founder.
Congratulations to this year’s honoree, Don Price, sexton of Greenwood Cemetery.
Don began his career with the City of Orlando at age 19 when Grace Chewning, then city clerk, hired him to manage the city’s Records Department in 1987. In 2003, he was asked to also become the sexton at Orlando’s historic Greenwood Cemetery. Don has published articles in national trade publications and constantly receives praise for the compassion and wonderful service he offers clients.
Through the Moonlight Walking Tours that Don hosts at Greenwood, he has become a beloved ambassador for Central Florida’s history. His popular tours have made history at Greenwood one of hottest tickets in town. “We were a vibrant community way back into the 1800s,” Don says. “The tours are about getting people to understand and make that connection today.”
