Urban Sketching Workshop: Get Loose on Wall Street!

Saturday, December 14, 1 – 4 p.m.

Get Loose on Wall Street! (with Linework and Color)

For students 14 to 24 years old, $5

Wall Street Plaza faces Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando, between the historic Angebilt Hotel building, Wall Street Cantina, and Heritage Square Park. Platted in 1881 as Oak Street, what’s now a pedestrian-only block originally formed the north boundary of Orange County’s courthouse square. Today, it’s full with restaurants and nightlife with hints of its previous incarnations—a great place to sketch.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to create depth using values created with linework and analogous colors. We will walk to Wall Street Plaza to set up and create! Wall Street has changed over the years, and we will capture its current vibe using several mediums and focusing predominantly on gestural linework. The workshop will also demystify how to compose a sketch using the magical (but very easy) rule of thirds!

From here, we will create simple thumbnails to block out the composition. Then, the focus is on drawing in the main subject using predominantly darker linework. As elements recede into the distance, we will put less emphasis on linework to create lighter values. Then we add color using a simple palette to create a sense of depth.

This workshop is open to students aged 14 to 24. All skill levels are welcome. Sketching materials will be provided by Sam Flax Orlando. The sketching portion of the workshop will take place outdoors. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and bring water and a snack. Participants can bring a folding chair or stool to sit.
