Historical Society's 2010 John Young History Maker Celebration to Honor Charles Millican, UCF's Founding President
Walt Disney World Resort Event Title Sponsor
Walt Disney World Resort is Title Sponsor of the Historical Society of Central Florida’s fifth annual John Young History Maker Celebration on April 22, 2010, honoring Dr. Charles Norman Millican, the University of Central Florida’s first president. Dr. Millican will receive the Historical Society’s highest honor, according to J. Charles Gray, Chairman of the Board and founding director of the law firm GrayRobinson, P.A., and co-chair of next year’s awards ceremony with Dick Nunis, retired chairman of Walt Disney Attractions, and Gary May, owner and operator of Hopewell Land Partners, a capital investment firm in Florida, North Carolina, and New Mexico. The John Young History Maker Award, named after Captain John Young, is given each year to a Central Floridian whose lifetime of achievement has made a historic impact on the community. The History Maker Celebration is the Historical Society’s largest fundraiser of the year and will be held at the Ballroom at Church Street Station.
The John Young History Maker Past award will be given posthumously to Earl “Duke” Crittenden. Crittenden, who once owned one of the state’s biggest citrus operations, Crittenden Fruit Co., passed away in 2009. The Historical Society of Central Florida will announce the recipient of the 2010 John Young History Maker Future Award and scholarship at the April 22nd celebration. The scholarship is awarded annually to one outstanding Orange County public high school student based on criteria including their embodiment of the Historical Society’s mission. The award is granted in the name of Captain John Young to a graduating senior planning to attend a four-year university and major in the sciences.
The gala event is expected to draw more than 500 guests. Funds raised from the event support nationally important exhibitions and educational programs that served more than 150,000 children and adults in the community last year alone.
Table sponsorships and tickets are available for the gala event, including reception at 6 p.m. and ceremony and dinner at 7 p.m. For more information and pricing, call (407) 836-8546.
