Aphrodisiacs: Myth or Reality with Francine SeganSaturday, February 4, 2012
Get ready for Valentine’s Day with an amusing discussion on aphrodisiacs from ancient Egyptian times through the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and into today. Discover the foods reported to have unleashed passion in everyone from Cleopatra to the Marquis de Sade while sampling classic aphrodisiac dishes. Explore the stories behind aphrodisiacs including frog saliva, rhinoceros horns, oysters, truffles, caviar, and more. Francine Segan has been featured in many TV specials for the History and Discovery channels and the Food Network. Segan is the author of five cookbooks including “Shakespeare’s Kitchen” and “Opera Lover’s Cookbook” and has been nominated for both James Beard and IACP awards. Program at 7 p.m. followed by a book signing. Members: $20 for individuals, $30 for two. Non-members: $30 for individuals, $40 for two. Space is limited. Call (407) 836-7010 for reservations.

Although Harriet Beecher Stowe is most famous for her 1852 book, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” she also wrote a book in 1873, “Palmetto Leaves,” one of the first travel guides written about Florida that may have sparked the real beginning of tourism in Florida in the 1880s, claims John T. Foster. Meet Foster and his wife Sarah, former faculty members at Florida A&M University, as they discuss their book, “Calling Yankees to Florida: Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Forgotten Tourist Articles.” Listen to their assessment of the impact of Stowe’s articles, which address how the world of tourism, retirees from the North, citrus, and winter vegetables can be traced to a small group of Yankee men and women.10:30 a.m.-noon.
